Danielson Framework Component - Instruction. (3b: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques. 3c: Engaging students in learning.)

Reflection:

This standard was specifically implemented in the first lesson my university supervisor observed and evaluated using the Danielson Framework. I taught Language Arts by performing an interactive read aloud using the book Abe's Honest Words by Doreen Rappaport. I picked and modified specific questions from the district's curriculum in order to make them my own. I also built off of them to create many turn and talk discussions for the students, making sure the content of each question related to specific reading skills and strategies for the week. I would often roam the classroom, listen in on bits of each table's conversation, and offer positive feedback and praise. I regrouped the class right before conversations would go off topic using a transition tool such as the hand clapper pictured in the photo all the way to the right on the desktop stand. I built a sense of community by having each table share out their thoughts. In addition, I introduced a prop into this lesson consisting of Abe's face glued to some popsicle sticks. Students voluntarily held this up in front of their face and read quotes of Abe using their best impersonation skills whenever they popped up during their turn to read aloud to the class. They all wanted to hear mine at the end. They were super impressed. They truly felt special holding a prop while reading, even if it was only for a moment, and using a different tone while reading. It grabbed and kept their attention while their desire for reading grew.
